Vacancy

Vacancy stars Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson. They're a couple in the throes of a strained marriage and get stranded when their car breaks down on a back road taken as a shortcut. At first glance Kate's character isn't very likable. But her character's motivations and the reason for their marital troubles are explained through their struggle. As in many a horror film they end up in the wrong spot. This time an out of the way motel with a twitchy manager played convincingly by Frank Whaley. Unlabelled VCR tapes in their room seem to show movies with robberies and/or murders until they realize the scenes were filmed in their very room. What follows is a taut roller-coaster ride. This movie works on all levels. The suspense is drawn out well and unlike the norm the characters are fairly smart in their actions. Enhancing what is already a good film. It's not often we see two known stars in this type of fare and their talents are put to great effect here. Vacancy is a strong entrant and one that is sure to please.
